Nights of Sharjah: Drone Racing Champions 2024

In a whirlwind of propellers and adrenaline, Sharjah, UAE, played host to one of the most monumental events in the history of drone racing – the Sharjah Drone Racing Champions. Held at the illustrious Al Majaz Amphitheatre on April 20-21, this spectacle brought together 16 of the fastest drone racing pilots from across the globe for a showdown unlike any other.

Organized by MultiGP Drone Racing in collaboration with Al Majaz Amphitheatre, the competition showcased the pinnacle of drone racing prowess. With pilots hailing from four different continents, the grand final was a true testament to the global appeal of this electrifying sport.

The race format was as intense as the action it yielded. Pilots flew the track  with precision and skill using 7-inch stock drones specially built for the event by Five33, complete with dazzling LED displays that added a futuristic flair to the competition.

Among the finalists were Luke “BanniUK” Bannister from the UK, MinChan “MCK FPV” Kim from South Korea, Levi “Leviathann” Johnson representing the USA, and Killian “Darkex” Rousseau flying the flag for France.

As the races unfolded over two exhilarating days, it was Killian  who emerged as the frontrunner, showcasing an unstoppable display of skill and speed, finishing on top with 412 points, followed by Leviathann (316) , MCK FPV (297) and BanniUK (234).

However, fate took a sharp turn in the grand final. In a heart-pounding moment, Killian faced a mid-air collision with MCK FPV in the first race at the tower split-s maneuver, followed by a fourth-place finish in the subsequent round.

In a nail-biting climax, Leviathann seized the opportunity to shine. With unparalleled  concentration, he dominated the competition, leaving his competitors trailing behind. His victory in the grand final solidified his status as the ultimate drone racing champion of the event.

“My mind was so locked in on the race that I didn’t think about how I was winning until after I crossed the finish line. It felt like a dream to try to think about how I actually won, and I still can’t fathom it,”  Leviathann commented to The National (Sharjah main press)  after the competition.

I think I came into this race with a great mindset, and continued to stay focused during my races, and that gave me an edge on the competition. One thing that helped lead to the win was going out on the field with a confident attitude and not having a moment of doubt that I wouldn’t fly my best,” he added.

Also MCK, who’s not accustomed placing 2nd said “I’m happy for my friend“.

Beyond the thrill of the races, the atmosphere at the Al Majaz Amphitheatre was nothing short of electric. Packed to the brim with enthusiastic spectators for two consecutive days, the venue buzzed with excitement and anticipation. For many, this marked their first experience of witnessing drone racing live, adding to the sense of occasion and celebration.

Indeed, the Drone Racing Champions event was more than just a competition; it was a festival of high-flying feats and technological marvels. Spectators were treated to mesmerizing drone shows, while workshops offered insights into the world of drone racing.  MultiGP also introduced the community to flight simulators and micro whoop drones in the activation area, which further underscored the inclusive and educational spirit of the event.

This event also marked a significant shift for MultiGP. Well known for hosting events that cater primarily to pilots, this event proved that MultiGP is also well equipped to deliver an experience designed specifically for the audience. With its blend of speed, skill, and spectacle, this event will be remembered as a defining moment in the history of drone racing, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this thrilling saga.

The hospitality extended to the pilots exceeded all expectations and made the experience truly memorable.  It’s evident that everyone involved shares a genuine passion for drone racing and as MultiGP we can’t do anything  else but be grateful to all the Al Majaz Amphitheatre staff for making us feel so welcomed.
